All full-time matriculated
students study a major instrument with a qualified professional
musician under the supervision of a music program director.
“Juried” performance exams are required
at the end of each semester of instruction. Major instrument
instruction emphasizes all aspects of technical development
and tonal production through the study of traditional
methods and repertory. These serve as the foundation for the understanding
and application of contemporary techniques of improvisation.
Students taking private instruction must attend at least
one recital each semester that will serve to refine
their musical judgment. They must submit performance
critique forums to their instructor that will provide
feedback to the soloist.
