The Music Therapy Center at Long Island Conservatory
was established to serve a wide variety of clients in
improving the quality of life by empowering clients
to reach their full functioning potential, regardless
of existing challenges and disabilities. A music therapist
identifies the client’s therapeutic needs by analyzing
and interpreting assessment information. Based upon
this, the therapist formulates a treatment plan, including
goals and methodology. Then, the therapist sensitively
introduces the process of therapy through music and
musical activities: singing, instrumental play, clinical
improvisation, song discussion, songwriting, music and
movement, music and imagery, stress management, and
meditation. Audiotape or videotape may be used to document
and evaluate the sessions. Musical ability or prior
training is not needed for clients to receive the full
benefit of music therapy services. A few of the specialized
treatment programs offered at the center include individual
and small-group therapy for clients with autism, brain
injury, and developmental delays and disabilities. Other
programs include music therapy groups for women, stress
management, drum circle groups, retirement adjustment,
senior citizens and Alzheimer’s patients.
The Music Therapy Center at Long Island Conservatory
serves as a clinical site for the training and supervision
of Music Therapy Interns and Field-Work Students from
our own programs as well as Music Therapy programs.
Also, in order to advance the practice and understanding
of music therapy, Music Therapy Center and Long Island
Conservatory participate in ongoing research projects
at area University and College facilities.
