SCAT I (2nd - 3rd Grade)
English:
At an early age, these students learn English skills
like grammar, vocabulary, reading, and writing which
are slightly above their level. These classes are designed
for slightly higher level students who can be challenged
further to accelerate. Vocabulary, reading, writing,
and grammar are all covered within this course. Each
topic of English is presented in a way in which the
students will be challenged and required to use the
skills that they have been learning.
Math:
This group class offers to help understand and learn
solid computation skills, and gradually provides training
in word problems. This class covers all steps of numeration:
addition, subtraction: 2, 3, 4-digits. Multiplication:
up to 3, 4-digitsby 3-digits. Division: up to 2, 3 and
4 digit dividends. Measurements will also be covered:
time, linear, capacity, and weight. Throughout this
course, computation skills and word problems are developed
to motivate and encourage the student and to show how
math is used effectively in everyday life.
SCAT II (4th - 5th Grade)
English:
In CTY-Plus Class, concentration is on preparing the
students for the Johns Hopkin’s Achievement Test,
as well as the State-Mandated TerraNova Test. Emphasis
is on Reading Skills, including Literal and Inferential
Comprehension, Interpretation and Evaluation; Grammar
and Usage- Parts of Speech, Sentence Structure, Capitalization
and Punctuation; Language Usage- Vocabulary Skills-
Word Parts, Roots and Derivatives, Work Origins, Synonyms,
Antonyms and Homophones, Words with Multiple Meanings,
Using Context Clues, Analogies, Spelling Rules, Confusing
and Tricky Works; Identifying and Interpreting Various
Sources of Information and Library, Research and Study
Skills.
Math:
Throughout this group class, the student will work on
several topics that connect math ideas to various interest
areas, in order to gain a thorough understanding of
math concepts through word problems. This class covers
all steps of numeration (addition and subtraction: 1,
2-digits through 6 digits), multiplication (up to 4-digits
by 3-digits), division (2, 3, 4 and 5-digit dividends),
decimals (all numeration), measurements (linear, area,
capacity, weight, time, temperature, and money), fractions
(fractional numbers, proper and improper fractions,
mixed number fractions, and common denominator), all
numeration of fractions (addition, subtraction, multiplication
and division), percent, ratio, proportion, and some
key geometric concepts (line segment, angles, polygons,
circles, and three dimensional objects). This group
class emphasizes problem solving and word problems as
they constitute a very important part of the student
learning process. These everyday life applications are
established to strongly encourage and motivate the student
to think how math can be used effectively.
SCAT III (6th Grade).
CTY (7th - 8th Grade)
English:
This course focuses on preparing the students for a
more advanced level of English than what they are learning
in their schools. Although many of the topics are similar,
it is taught and geared towards the CTY test and is
more intense. This course challenges students to go
beyond what they normally study in school and focus
on reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension
at a higher level.
Math:
This course prepares the students to take the SSAT exam
which consists of many SAT questions. The test will
identify academically able students who will qualify
to go to Johns Hopkins for their summer program. The
students go over subjects in math like algebra, arithmetic,
geometry, and solving word problems. The skills that
they will learn in this class help them to prepare for
future exams like the SAT’s as well as apply math
on a daily basis.
